Windsurf Favaritx

Some pictures from a session at Favaritx. In a northerly this is dead side shore and the headland reduces and cleans up the swell (although unfortunately makes a mess of the wind until you get well downwind of it). I needed to walk about 10m minutes to get to the beach where I launched. The wind here is super gusty but it offers a nice sheltered rigging spot. From here I sailed down to the next beach where I found a decent wave. There is a rock which causes it to break and - since the rock becomes exposed in the troughs - it is best to pass just downwind of this.

Snow in Minorca

Menorca had a spectacular snowfall back in February (11-02-2010, 12-02-2010) when the landscape temporarily took on a central European, and in the hilly bits Alpine, appearance. Unlike previous Menorca snowfalls I’ve witnessed this was real snow – fluffy rather than slushy, and on higher ground it stayed around for a number of days. According to the local press it was the most significant snowfall for 50 years. Check out the gallery with pictures from the Sa Roca area and the Ses Salines beach.
Gallery - real snow!

Island Games Photos

Here are some photos from the Windsurfing and Laser events at 2009 Natwest Island Games, recently disputed in Aland. Menorca did rather well in windsurfing taking the top 3 positions and the team event. The Lasers found the competition tougher but still managed a 3rd in the team event. The event was impecably organised and excellent fun. The wind was very light for the early races with a few windier ones later on in the week.

Photos Tirant 21-6-09

Big Sunday!
A great summer's day for the island's windsurfers. Strong Tramontana throughout the day. There were lots of people sailing Fornells Addaia and Cala Tirant - where Mode and Jono sailed during the morning with John taking the photos:

The wave on the west side of the bay was working nicely and Mode took the day's best waves.

Camí de Cavalls

If you live on the island you'll have heard that recently much of the Camí de Cavalls has been made transitable. The Cami de Cavalls is a network of historic paths that circle the island by the coast - originally with a strategic defence function. Its recent history has also seen conflict: with some sections of the route being blocked by landowners not recognising the right of way. This has lead to conflict in the paths themselves and in the courts over several decades.

Cámara 2 unwell

Cámara 2 (Tirant) has a technical problem - it appear to have broken - so is offline for now. The image looks like this, which doesn't look right:

Hopefully we'll manage to get a repair or replacement before too long (there is a bit of cash left over from the 'Fornellsbaywatch Locals Menorca' t-shirts that were sold, which will go towards a fix...). Thanks for your patience...

Camara 2: costa sur

We're still looking for a good location for Camara 2 on the south coast of the island. We're looking for somewhere

  • with broadband (and router)
  • close to and with a good view of the sea (preferably Sant Tomas or Punta Prima)
  • where a small unobtrusive camara can sit behind a window (the camara is for indoors only and is about 15x7x4cm)

Fitting is very easy - it just plugs into the router and works - and in exchange we can offer advertising space on FBW - one of the most popular websites in the whole of Minorca, perhaps. :-)

New photos

I've added a few galeries of my favourite photos to the site. They're split into categories of surf, windsurf, landscapes etc... Some are from quite a while ago and some pretty recent. I decided to put the gallery up after seeing a photo on Flickr pretty much identical to one I took some time ago (with my first digital camera - 1.2MP !:  reflejo fornells ). It made me think that amongst all the dross I've got a few nice shots, and why not stick them online.
